Addendum 45: Sir John Hubert
Plunkett Murray KCMG
Sir John Hubert Plunkett Murray (29 December 1861 – 27 February 1940) was a judge in what was then known as British New Guinea, and subsequently held the position of Lieutenant-Governor of Papua from 1908 until his death at Samarai in 1940.
He was succeeded by his nephew Hubert Leonard Murray CBE (refer Addendum 46). He was no relation to Sir Jack Keith Murray discussed in Addendum 44.
In Port Moresby the PNG Army barracks (called Murray Barracks), the leading "international" primary school (called The Ela Murray International School), the Hubert Murray Stadium, and the main highway are all named after him.
Born in Sydney, his father Sir Terence Aubrey Murray, was a pastoralist and politician. Terence Murray lived from 1865 on his salary as president of the Legislative Council
having lost his Yarralumla and Winderradeen properties (near Canberra) due to financial difficulties.
In Appendix B at the end of his memoirs, David Marsh mentions an interesting twist of fate in that the sister of David’s great grandfather tutored John Hubert Plunkett Murray in Australia.
