SUPPLEMENTARY HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The addenda which follow are supplementary historical information and photos for those readers who are interested in more detail about the people and places referred to by David Marsh in his memoirs, “The District Commissioner”. There are many fine individuals who did much to help the developing nation of Papua New Guinea and are deserving of being mentioned. The information has been aggregated from a number of different historical sources.

The word “native” was used in the colonial era to describe the indigenous peoples of Papua and New Guinea and is used in the book as an authentic accurate historical reference to the vernacular of such times. We appreciate in the modern world such a word may be considered inappropriate and we in no way mean to cause offence to any reader or any person. The word “European” was used to describe those who were “white” being non indigenous and non Chinese.
